Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK and Member of Parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, announced his resignation from Parliament on Tuesday, triggering a by‑election.
In a press conference streamed online, he said the resignation is intended to force a “people versus establishment” contest and confirmed his intention to stand as a candidate in the ensuing vote.
The decision comes amid scrutiny over gifts received from wealthy donors while he was out of office. An investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is currently underway.
In May 2024, Farage received a $5 million donation from cryptocurrency entrepreneur Christopher Harborne. He maintains the gift was unconditional, made during his period as a private citizen, and did not breach parliamentary standards.
Farage argues the funding is essential for personal security, citing an increase in threats, including an attack on his home and frequent online death threats. He said repeated requests for assistance from the Home Secretary were ignored, forcing him to cover security costs himself. He described the situation as requiring lifelong protection.
He also disclosed that, days after the murder of political activist Charlie Kirk, his security budget was cut by 70 percent, a reduction he said endangers his safety.
By vacating his seat, a writ will be issued, and a by‑election is expected within three to four weeks, likely in early August. The contest will serve as a direct referendum on the constituency.
