The Trump Justice Department has received a request from House Republicans for a formal investigation into the Zohran Mamdani administration over a potential violation of the Logan Act.
The controversy centers around a scheduled meeting between Commissioner Ana María Archila, head of the Mayor's Office for International Affairs, and Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran's permanent representative to the UN, at 2 United Nations Plaza.
The meeting was called off after the US State Department intervened to "clarify acceptable conduct," but not before it had been discovered that the Mamdani administration had not informed the State Department in advance.
House Republicans claim that this potential violation of the Logan Act warrants a full investigation, and have requested that the Department of Justice look into the matter.
A letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, signed by Rep. Addison McDowell and several other lawmakers, expressed concern over the Mamdani administration's actions.
The letter stated that the administration's behavior suggests that they see New York City as a sovereign nation, separate from the United States.
This assertion is being met with harsh criticism, with some arguing that the Mamdani administration's actions are a clear overstep of power and a betrayal of the trust placed in them by the American people.
