The U.S. immigration judge has ordered the deportation of a 33-year-old Canadian woman who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault in connection with a July 3 incident on a New Jersey boardwalk.
Kaitlyn Tracey, a Canadian citizen, entered a guilty plea to simple assault as part of a deal after she was arrested for her involvement in a confrontation with four teenagers. She was sentenced to one day in jail but was granted time served.
The Department of Homeland Security dubbed Tracey "the Maple Leaf Menace" and criticized her actions, saying, "This illegal alien who assaulted a teenager has no business being in our country." The DHS stated that Tracey had been in the U.S. on an expired visa and had overstayed her visa, failing to depart.
Tracey's defense lawyer, Francis Hodgson, attempted to downplay the incident, describing his client as a "productive member of society" who had maintained employment during her time in the U.S. However, the judge ultimately sided with the government, ordering Tracey's deportation.
