Paris Commemorates Bastille Day with Vivid Celebrations: Essential Travel Guide for 2026

Paris Commemorates Bastille Day with Vivid Celebrations: Essential Travel Guide for 2026

For 2026, the main Eiffel Tower fireworks display and Concert de Paris have been moved to Monday, July 13, allowing Tuesday, July 14, to be dedicated to remembrance of the tenth anniversary of the Nice attack. The traditional military parade will still take place on the morning of July 14 along the Champs‑Élysées.

Bastille Day, officially La Fête Nationale, is observed annually on July 14 to commemorate the 1789 storming of the Bastille and the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, events that marked the end of the monarchy and the birth of the French Republic.

The day’s centerpiece is Europe’s oldest and largest regular military parade, staged on the Champs‑Élysées. The procession begins near the Arc de Triomphe around 10 a.m., featuring the President’s arrival, aerial displays, and units on foot, motorcycles, horses, tanks, and allied contingents.

Traffic on the avenue is closed from early morning, and security measures are heightened. Spectators are advised to arrive early, consider elevated viewpoints, and note that several nearby metro stations close between 8 a.m. and noon.

After the parade, the Champs‑Élysées remains pedestrian‑only until early evening, providing ample space for visitors to explore the avenue and nearby landmarks.

Many museums and monuments stay open on the holiday, though some, such as the Louvre, close on Tuesdays. Popular sites include Notre‑Damе, Les Invalides, Sacré‑Cœur, the Panthéon, Sainte‑Chapelle, Musée d’Orsay and the Palace of Versailles.

An open‑air cinema program is offered in several parks, with screenings typically scheduled for early evening, providing a family‑friendly option for the holiday.

The evening concert and fireworks are scheduled for July 13 at the Champ de Mars. The Concert de Paris begins at 9 p.m., featuring the National Orchestra and Radio France Choir, followed by a fireworks display at 11 p.m. that lasts about 20 minutes and includes a large drone show.

Access to the Champ de Mars is free, but security checks and crowd density are significant. Early arrival, preferably by 5 p.m., is recommended to secure a viewing spot.

Alternative viewing locations include bridges over the Seine and river cruises, though public restrooms are limited and may be crowded.

Metro service around the concert and fireworks area is reduced; stations may close before and after the event, and remaining stations experience heavy traffic. Walking is advised over taxis or rideshare services due to congestion.

Late‑night events include firemen’s balls hosted in fire stations across the city. These charitable gatherings feature music, dancing, and refreshments, typically running from 9 p.m. into the early morning hours.

The firemen’s balls provide an additional venue for celebration after the fireworks, with limited public transport operating until around 2:15 a.m.

Overall, Bastille Day 2026 offers a blend of historic ceremony, cultural performances and public festivities, drawing residents and visitors alike to the capital’s iconic venues.
