Mel C was almost kicked out of the Spice Girls over a spat with Victoria Beckham before their career had even started. The former bandmates can be seen supporting each other through family dramas and big milestones, but things haven't always been smooth sailing.
The band may have been preaching that "friendship never ends," but Sporty and Posh had a major clash at the Brit Awards in 1996. On a recent podcast, Mel, 52, shared how they would "police" each other to make sure nobody went "off the rails."
According to the podcast, there was a moment where Mel was policed by the band mates. They felt that she had taken her hair out, no longer wearing a ponytail, which was a part of the group's image at the time. Mel had taken her hair out at the Brits, and her fellow band mates thought she was "fucking with the look of the band."
They criticized her, and Mel told one of them to "fuck off." The next day, they all came on heavy, telling her that her behavior was disgusting. Mel recalled that the moment sent her into "terror" because she thought she was going to "lose everything" after that night.
She was hauled into manager Simon Fuller's office to have a chat, in which he said "in no uncertain terms" that "if anything ever happened like that again, I would be gone." Mel was completely freaked out by this, as she didn't realize she had done anything that terribly bad. She also feared that her actions may have led to her losing everything she had ever wanted.
Thankfully, the incident blew over, and the band released three successful albums before their hiatus in 2000. Over the years, they've reunited in various configurations, but we're still waiting for a full five-piece gig. Mel shared that she would love to see the group reunite on stage together, potentially as holographic avatars.
Mel is currently embarking on her first world tour in 20 years, following the huge success of her solo album Sweat. She loves performing and finds it gives her so much energy, reminding her of why she does it. The people who appreciate her music are the best thing, she said.
