Microsoft's Edge browser includes a built‑in VPN that encrypts traffic generated by the browser. The tunnel protects users from eavesdropping on their browsing activity.
The VPN covers only browser traffic. Other data, such as email, DNS queries, or system updates, is not encrypted.
By default, the VPN activates when a user connects to an unsecured Wi‑Fi network or visits an unencrypted HTTP site. It does not enable automatically on secure connections.
To change the default behavior, open Edge settings. Navigate to Privacy, Search, and Services > Security and toggle on Use Secure Microsoft Edge Network. Then select All Websites to apply the VPN to every site.
The free VPN includes a monthly data allowance of 5 GB. Downloads and video streaming can quickly consume this limit.
On a trusted home network, a VPN may not be necessary for browsing. For full‑device protection, a paid VPN can secure all traffic.
