University students have launched an artificial intelligence‑driven chatbot designed to help Filipino internet users verify online claims amid a surge of AI‑generated misinformation.
The web‑based tool, named “Legit ba ’to?” (Is this legit?), was created by technology and communication students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the University of the Philippines to automate a traditionally manual fact‑checking process.
Project lead Lesmon Andres L. Saluta explained that fact‑checking has become increasingly labor‑intensive as fabricated headlines proliferate, and that the rise of advanced technology and AI amplifies the spread of false information.
The chatbot operates through Facebook Messenger and Instagram, allowing users to forward links, screenshots, and social‑media posts for verification. An AI research agent then cross‑references the claims with recent news reports, fact‑check databases, and official sources before delivering a response.
Developers modeled the system on the workflow used by professional fact‑checkers, aiming to replicate the analytical steps a seasoned journalist would take when assessing a claim.
To avoid mislabeling jokes or memes, the AI has been trained to recognize Filipino humor, satire, manipulated images, and AI‑generated content, distinguishing genuine misinformation from creative expression.
The Philippines continues to grapple with online misinformation; a recent survey indicated that 59 % of citizens view fake news as a serious problem, while 65 % admit difficulty determining the veracity of online content.
Saluta noted that false information often succeeds because it appeals to readers’ emotions, prompting them to share without taking the extra step to verify facts.
Since its debut on July 11, the chatbot has processed more than 100 verification requests, reflecting early adoption by the public.
Developers stress that their goal is not to meet numeric targets but to prevent harmful misinformation, believing that averting even a single false claim can justify their efforts.
The launch coincides with legislative initiatives aimed at penalizing the creation and deliberate spread of false information that threatens public welfare or national security.
