Hundreds of Pubs to Close Before England Takes on Mexico in World Cup Warm-Up Match

Hundreds of Pubs to Close Before England Takes on Mexico in World Cup Warm-Up Match

The English Premier League match between England and Mexico on 27 June has prompted a handful of pubs to keep their doors open late for fans.

Wetherspoon confirmed that only five of its 800 venues will remain open for the game, while Greene King, which operates more than 2,600 pubs, restaurants and hotels, announced that over 600 of its premises across England will stay open late to show the match.

Local pub owners have taken differing stances. Tommy Higgs, co‑owner of The Three Horseshoes in Witney, explained that his venue would not open for the match, citing concerns about community noise and the disruption to the town’s quiet hours.

Greene King’s brand director highlighted the club’s enthusiasm for the event, noting that the atmosphere in its pubs provides a unique gathering place for fans to celebrate together.

England will face Mexico in the last‑16 round after defeating the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2‑1 earlier in the tournament.

Only a select number of Wetherspoon and Greene King locations will remain open for the match, including the Bishops Mill in Durham, Cooper Rose in Sunderland, and several venues across London, the Midlands, and the South. The decision reflects a balance between meeting fan demand and respecting local community standards.
