A serious multi-vehicle crash occurred in Jasper County, Northwest Indiana, on Wednesday, involving a semi-truck that was driven by an undocumented immigrant. The driver, 38, who was living in East Chicago, is accused of running a red light and crashing into a Buick on State Road 10.
The force of the collision caused the Buick to hit another semi-truck. A grandmother driving the Buick and her 3-year-old grandchild were badly injured and had to be airlifted to two separate hospitals. The driver of the other semi-truck was also transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries.
The Jasper County Sheriff's Department received multiple 911 calls just after 10:30 a.m. regarding the accident. Authorities report that the driver of the semi-truck, Emmanuel Lopez Tlacomulco, disregarded a red light and collided with the silver Buick.
An immigration detainer was placed on Tlacomulco, as he was found to be in the United States illegally. He is facing multiple charges related to the crash. The incident caused significant disruptions, with the road being closed for several hours until the scene could be cleared.
The crash resulted in significant injuries to the occupants of the Buick and the other semi-truck driver. The grandmother and her 3-year-old grandchild were taken to separate hospitals by air ambulance. The other semi-truck driver received treatment at a hospital.
