MURPHY DEFIES DESTINY! Xintong CRUSHED by Crucible CURSE!

MURPHY DEFIES DESTINY! Xintong CRUSHED by Crucible CURSE!

The Crucible Theatre witnessed a stunning upset as Zhao Xintong’s reign as World Champion came to an end, extinguished by a relentless Shaun Murphy.

Zhao began with a flash of brilliance, seizing the early frames and hinting at a dominant defense of his title. But the initial fire quickly faded, allowing Murphy to seize control and build a commanding lead after the first session.

Tuesday’s second session proved a tense affair, a back-and-forth struggle where Zhao clawed his way back into contention. A second century break fueled his resurgence, leveling the match at 8-8 as they headed into Wednesday’s decisive afternoon session.

Halo World Snooker Championship - Day Eight

Neither player had truly found their rhythm, a simmering tension hanging over the arena. It became clear that the first to ignite with a burst of inspired play would likely surge towards victory – and that player proved to be Murphy.

The 2005 World Champion unleashed a barrage of impressive breaks – 96, 80, and 70 – relentlessly pushing towards the finish line. Zhao, the defending champion, found himself struggling, increasingly pressured and on the verge of collapse.

Facing potential disaster with every shot, Zhao responded with a magnificent 81, a desperate attempt to reignite his challenge. But the reprieve was short-lived. Murphy, known as “The Magician,” conjured a crucial break of 69, navigating nervy exchanges to finally secure his place in the semi-finals.

This semi-final appearance marks Murphy’s first since 2021, a significant return to form after a previous final appearance in 2015. He now awaits the winner of the John Higgins versus Neil Robertson match.

The Australian, Robertson, currently holds a 9-7 advantage over Higgins, with their match resuming Wednesday evening. The outcome will determine Murphy’s semi-final opponent.

On the other side of the draw, Mark Allen has already booked his semi-final spot, defeating Barry Hawkins 13-11. He will face either Hossein Vafaei or Wu Yize, both vying for their first ever Crucible semi-final appearance, in a match concluding tonight.
