Saudi-led Group Finalizes $55 Billion English Premier League

Saudi-led Group Finalizes $55 Billion English Premier League

The video game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has officially been acquired by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. The acquisition, valued at around $55 billion, marks one of the largest leveraged buyouts in history.

According to EA's completion statement, the company's common stock has ceased trading and will be delisted from Nasdaq. Shareholders will receive $210 in cash for each share. The consortium's agreement to acquire EA was initially made on September 29, 2025, and was approved by shareholders at a special meeting on December 22, 2025.

The deal has sparked concerns among analysts and gamers alike, with speculation surrounding how EA will service the $20 billion borrowed by the consortium to fund the acquisition. Some have predicted that the company may implement cost-cutting measures, including mass layoffs and more aggressive monetization strategies.

Electronic Arts said on Tuesday that its acquisition by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners had closed, valuing the games publisher at about $55bn (£41bn). Shareholders receive $210 in cash for each share.

Andrew Wilson, EA's chairman and chief executive, has expressed optimism about the deal, stating that the company is entering this new chapter from a position of strength with partners who share its vision and ambition. The consortium's financial adviser, J.P. Morgan Securities, played a key role in arranging the debt financing for the acquisition.

The acquisition has been hailed as a strategic move by the Public Investment Fund, which manages over $900 billion in assets. The fund's deputy governor and head of international investments, Turqi Alnowaiser, has stated that entertainment and sports are key areas of focus for the fund, which sees great potential in the rapidly evolving gaming industry.

However, not everyone is celebrating the deal. Some have expressed concerns about the potential influence of the Saudi government on EA's creative decisions, particularly given the country's human rights record and strict laws regarding same-sex relationships. The acquisition has also raised questions about the ethics of "sportswashing," or using sports to promote a positive public image and divert attention from human rights issues.

George Osborn, a journalist and author, has pointed out that the acquisition gives the Public Investment Fund a soft power asset that is deeply entrenched in the sporting community. He notes that EA's live-service titles, which are continuously updated after release, are seemingly evergreen and have great potential for growth.

The deal is the latest in a series of sports and gaming investments made by the Public Investment Fund, including the £300 million takeover of Newcastle United and the Esports World Cup held in 2025. However, the acquisition has also drawn criticism from advocacy groups, including the Players Alliance HQ, which has asked gamers to petition their local politicians against the deal.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve and grow, the acquisition of EA by the Public Investment Fund has sparked a heated debate about the ethics of the deal and its potential implications for the industry as a whole. How the fund chooses to use its new asset in the years to come remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the gaming world will be watching closely.

The acquisition has also raised questions about the potential impact on EA's employees and the company's creative direction. With the consortium's influence, some have speculated that EA may be forced to make significant changes to its business model and creative decisions.

The deal is a significant milestone in the gaming industry, and its implications will be felt for years to come. As the industry continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how the Public Investment Fund chooses to use its new asset and how it impacts the gaming world.
