Overlooked Film Crew Members Deserve Recognition as True Cinema

Film scores have become one of the most enduring forms of orchestral music in modern life. Millions who would never voluntarily listen to a symphony regularly absorb complex compositions through cinema.

The medium may be visual, but music supplies its emotional architecture. Silent films relied on live pianists, and sound-era classics depend on scores to transform action into tension, grief, or exhilaration.

Effective film music bypasses logic and targets feeling directly. Before a line of dialogue is spoken, a composer has signaled whether an audience should laugh, weep, or brace for danger.

Landmark works include Lalo Schifrin’s Mission: Impossible theme and Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho strings. John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Danny Elfman have each defined eras through distinct sonic identities.

Other scores operate through atmosphere rather than melody. Jonny Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood, Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Sicario and Arrival, and Cliff Martinez’s Drive use texture to deepen narrative weight.

The longevity of great film music is striking. Rocky’s theme remains instinctive five decades later, and Morricone’s western motifs still circulate as cultural shorthand.

Audiences debate actors and plots, yet scores often outlast every other element in memory. From Howard Shore’s layered Lord of the Rings work to simpler whistleable themes, the music persists.

An annual survey invites film fans to name the greatest score ever written. Established classics dominate, but listeners consistently champion lesser-known favorites.

The poll closes at midnight on August 16, with the resulting top 100 to be revealed on August 31.
