Midwest Democratic candidate’s policies deemed extreme by critics

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers expressed confidence that he will defeat any Democratic opponent in the upcoming Michigan race.

The Democratic primary pits former Wayne County health official Abdul El‑Sayed against Representative Haley Stevens, reflecting a contest between a progressive challenger and a more moderate establishment candidate.

Rogers described both El‑Sayed and Stevens as too extreme for Michigan voters, questioning their suitability for the state.

Analysts suggest that the heated primary could advantage Republicans and jeopardize the Democratic effort to retain the seat currently held by retiring Senator Gary Peters.

Rogers, who narrowly lost the 2024 Senate race, highlighted a renewed unity within the Republican Party and emphasized preparation for the post‑primary campaign.

El‑Sayed’s platform includes support for Medicare‑for‑All, the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and a critical stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza, while he would become the nation’s first Muslim senator if elected.

Backed by several progressive leaders, El‑Sayed has denied being a socialist and has pledged not to accept contributions from political action committees.

Rogers warned that El‑Sayed’s policies could undermine individual liberties and align with a broader socialist agenda.

Stevens asserted that the Democratic Party will unite after the primary and pursue a full‑scale effort in the general election.

El‑Sayed cautioned voters about the risks posed by both Trump and Rogers, accusing the Republican candidate of favoring large corporations over public interests.

Rogers dismissed El‑Sayed’s statements as false, stating that the challenger will continue to mislead voters through the election.
