A military veteran and his wife were fatally attacked during a burglary in Reform, Alabama, authorities confirmed. Justin Elrod, 46, and his wife, Lena Elrod, were found dead inside their home on Sunday at 12:15 a.m. A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
George Birmingham faces one count of capital murder, two counts of murder, one count of burglary, and additional drug-related charges. Court records state Birmingham allegedly used an electric saw to kill Lena Elrod and struck Justin Elrod in the head with a metallic object before the burglary.
Authorities describe Birmingham as an acquaintance of the Elrods, though no motive has been publicly disclosed. The sheriff’s office confirmed the suspect was taken into custody following the investigation into the couple’s deaths.
Justin Elrod was widely regarded as a humble and dedicated individual. Aliceville Mayor Terrence Windham described him as a resilient worker who served in the military and worked at a federal prison. “He was the last person I would expect something like this to happen to,” Windham said, emphasizing the community’s shock.
A coworker, Jason Burns, expressed ongoing grief over the tragedy. “About every five minutes, I’m having that moment,” he said, reflecting the emotional toll of the loss. The sheriff’s office has urged the public to support the victims’ families and first responders during this difficult time.
The case has left the community in mourning, with officials highlighting the senselessness of the violence. Investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the killings and burglary.
