LEGEND FALLEN: Stone Roses Bassist MANI Dead at 63!

The music world is reeling from the sudden loss of Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the iconic bassist of The Stone Roses, who has died at the age of 63.

The news was first shared by his brother, Greg, in a heartbreaking Facebook post, announcing the passing of his brother with the simple, devastating words: “Gary Mani Mounfield RIP.” He later added a poignant detail, revealing Mani is now “reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda.”

Reports indicate Mani passed away at home after collapsing, with emergency services unable to revive him. The news reached fellow musical legends Noel and Liam Gallagher on Thursday afternoon, hours before the public announcement.

Ian Brown, the lead singer of The Stone Roses, offered a brief but heartfelt tribute on social media, writing simply: “REST IN PEACE MANI X.”

Mani’s nephew shared his grief, noting the profound loss and the joy of his uncle being reunited with Imelda, who tragically passed away from cancer in 2023. He expressed love for Mani’s twins and his uncle Greg during this incredibly difficult time.

Rowetta, the vocalist from Happy Mondays, echoed the sentiments of many, stating she would miss him dearly and sending love to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.

Mani’s influence extended far beyond his musical contributions. ART for MCR, a Manchester-based charity, described the city’s musical landscape as irrevocably changed by his passing, calling him a “true giant” and a “massive influence.”

They remembered his unique groove, attitude, and spirit, acknowledging how deeply he shaped the music of a generation. The organization recalled the emotional impact of seeing him perform, particularly at the legendary Heaton Park gigs.

The news arrives less than a week after Mani announced an intimate UK tour featuring in-conversation events, promising a look back at his remarkable life and career, including reflections on The Stone Roses’ iconic 1990 Spike Island performance.

Mani first rose to prominence with The Stone Roses, a band that defined a generation. After their initial split in 1996, he found further success with Primal Scream before a triumphant reunion with The Stone Roses in 2011, igniting a massive stadium tour.

His death marks a second devastating loss for the Mounfield family, coming just two years after the passing of his beloved wife, Imelda. The music community mourns not only a brilliant musician but a cherished individual.
