The announcement of the W Punta Cana, Marriott’s first foray into the all-inclusive world, felt like a pivotal moment. For years, the company had been testing the waters with established brands, but the W – known for its vibrant energy and focus on experiences – seemed poised to redefine the all-inclusive concept. It wasn’t just about convenience; it was about a potential revolution.
After allowing the resort time to refine its opening, I arrived in late October with a sense of anticipation. What I discovered wasn’t just a good all-inclusive; it was exactly the elevated experience I’d hoped for. This wasn’t simply adding a logo to an existing property; it was a bold statement about the future of carefree luxury.
The first impression was breathtaking. A stunning W-branded drive led to a massive, open-air lobby brimming with lush plants and flowing water features. It possessed an effortless luxury rarely found in the all-inclusive space, a testament to the vision of Spain-based MAC Hotels and Grupo Puntacana.
The W brand has matured, evolving from a bold, in-your-face aesthetic to a more refined and universally appealing design. Architect Giuseppe Violante created a living, breathing space, incorporating plants that will flourish and enhance the property’s beauty over time. But beyond the design, it was the staff that truly set the tone – welcoming, energetic, and genuinely eager to assist.
W Punta Cana offers 340 rooms, each starting at a generous 700 square feet, all featuring king-size beds and luxurious bathtubs. Options range from standard rooms to sprawling suites, including swim-up access. My friend and I were fortunate enough to stay in a two-bedroom Oasis Mega Suite, complete with a private pool overlooking the ocean.
The suite’s living area was bathed in light, offering picture-perfect views of the ocean and swaying palm trees. A thoughtful touch was the vision board kit left by the W team, perfect for a relaxing evening while enjoying the massive TV. The suite also included a dining room, a wet bar stocked with local and imported beers and wines, and a record player with a curated selection of vinyl.
The main bedroom featured a cloudlike W bed, almost impossible to leave in the mornings. The bathroom was a sanctuary, boasting a large soaking tub, rainfall shower, dual vanities with luxurious Davines products, and a private outdoor shower surrounded by lush greenery. Frette bathrobes completed the indulgent experience.
The second bedroom, with its two king-size beds, offered ample space for spreading out. It also featured an outdoor shower facing the beach and a walk-through closet, making the suite feel more like a luxury apartment than a hotel room. Even a glimpse of a standard room revealed the same attention to detail – beautiful tubs, ample closet space, and those incredibly comfortable W beds.
Dining at W Punta Cana is a journey in itself. With a rotating selection of restaurants, guests are spoiled for choice, from the experiential tasting menus at Scena to Asian street food and a vibrant Mediterranean beach club. Every meal and drink is included, eliminating any financial surprises.
Scena was a standout, offering a Dominican and Caribbean fusion experience that rivaled some of the best restaurants I’ve encountered in New York City. The food was creative, unexpected, and utterly delicious, with highlights like octopus skewers and a deconstructed chocolate dessert. Satsuma Rooftop provided stunning views and delicate raw dishes paired with bespoke gin cocktails.
For a casual poolside meal, the Wet Deck offered poke bowls, French fries, and refreshing mango margaritas. The 33 1/3 Speakeasy, accessible via a special invitation, transported us back in time with vinyl records, arcade games, and moody lighting – the perfect spot for a nightcap. The Outpost Cafe provided a convenient spot for coffee, pastries, and grab-and-go snacks.
A particularly delightful surprise was the “hangover cure” delivered to our room after a fun evening – a rich, flavorful Dominican stew called sancocho. It was a thoughtful gesture that showcased the hotel’s commitment to anticipating and exceeding guest needs.
Beyond the dining and accommodations, the service at W Punta Cana was exceptional. From the poolside waitresses to the entertainment team, every interaction was marked by kindness, energy, and a genuine desire to help. The W Fit gym, infinity pool, and Away Spa offered further opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation.
The resort also offered a rotating menu of activities, including spiritual healing experiences, DJ sets, and fitness classes. It was easy to stay informed about the daily schedule through personal hosts who were always available to assist. The location, about an hour from Punta Cana International Airport, is easily accessible via hotel transportation or private booking services.
While the cost – starting at $700 per night or 137,000 Marriott Bonvoy points – is certainly an investment, it’s a worthwhile one considering the all-inclusive nature of the experience. Having recently experienced high beverage costs at another luxury resort, I appreciated the peace of mind knowing everything was covered.
W Punta Cana isn’t just an all-inclusive resort; it’s a glimpse into the future of all-inclusive travel. It’s a place where luxury, creativity, and exceptional service converge to create an unforgettable experience. I’m already planning my return, eager to soak up more of the W wow factor.
