President Donald Trump responded on Wednesday to the outcome of the Michigan Democratic Senate primary, in which Abdul El‑Sayed secured a victory over Haley Stevens.
Trump praised the result as favorable for the Republican Party and expressed confidence that Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers would perform strongly against El‑Sayed in the general election.
During the interview, the president characterized cities governed by socialist or communist officials as “filthy, dirty, and disgusting,” asserting that such policies lead to economic decline and increased crime.
He reiterated his view that socialist governance results in deteriorating public services and a lack of jobs, while emphasizing his personal preference for cleanliness.
El‑Sayed, identified with the Democratic Socialists of America, was projected as the primary winner early on Wednesday.
Haley Stevens received endorsements and significant financial support from established Democratic figures, including the outgoing Michigan governor and the Senate minority leader, with outside groups contributing more than $60 million to her campaign.
El‑Sayed’s campaign was bolstered by endorsements from progressive members of Congress and other left‑leaning public figures.
When questioned about the growing influence of the Democratic Socialists of America within the party, the Senate minority leader declined to comment, describing the Democratic Party as a “big tent.”
