Toronto Police are warning about potential dangers during upcoming Pride weekend and Canada Day celebrations, including pickpocketing and crowds.
Toronto Police Insp. Tricia Johnston cautioned, "A moment of distraction is all it takes to separate you from your valuables." She advised people to keep their valuables safe in their front pocket or zippered pouch, only bringing what they need to the events.
Johnston added, "Look after your friends. And please plan a safe way home." She noted that there were 102 occurrences of cellphone thefts and pickpocketing incidents at last year's Pride event.
Toronto Police Supt. Dave Correa said a significant police presence will be along the Pride Parade route on Sunday, and bylaw officers will also be on site throughout the day and evening.
Correa emphasized the focus will be on public safety, with monitoring of crowd dynamics and emergency routes. He warned that unsafe or unlawful behavior will not be tolerated.
He also reminded people that personal fireworks are not permitted on beaches or in the park, and that alcohol is prohibited on beaches. Bonfires are allowed with a city permit only, and drones are no longer permitted on the beach.
Correa encouraged people to enjoy the holiday, respect the community, follow the rules, and look out for one another. Police are also asking the public to use public transit where possible due to anticipated traffic congestion and road restrictions in the area.
