The U.S. military launched strikes against Iran on Wednesday, following a formal declaration by President Trump that a previous ceasefire had ended. The targeted operations, directed by the Commander in Chief, aim to disrupt Iranian capabilities to threaten international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global trade route.
Trump announced the action during a press briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stating, “We’re going to hit them hard tonight. They deserve it.” The president later shared footage of the attacks publicly, underscoring the administration’s response to recent Iranian aggression.
U.S. Central Command confirmed the strikes were authorized to address Iran’s “unjustified aggression” against commercial vessels. The military reported targeting over 80 sites across Iran, including facilities linked to attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. A Qatari natural gas tanker was among the vessels struck in Tuesday’s incidents, which prompted the renewed military response.
Trump revoked sanctions waivers on Iranian oil imports earlier in the week, citing escalating tensions. He framed the strikes as retribution for Tuesday’s attacks, warning, “If it happens again, it will get much worse.” The administration has not indicated further plans but emphasized ongoing accountability for threats to global maritime security.
The conflict marks a sharp escalation in regional hostilities, with both sides exchanging military actions over the past 48 hours. The Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil flows, remains a focal point of the geopolitical standoff.
