On July 17, a violent confrontation erupted at the Kaanapali Alii resort in West Maui, resulting in several injuries and a head wound that required more than a dozen staples.
A family from California claims the attack was racially motivated, describing themselves as targeted as “haole boys” – a term commonly used to refer to white people in Hawaiian contexts.
At least six members of the family needed medical assistance, and one male victim sustained a severe head injury that required extensive medical closure.
Joseph Headfield, a family member, recounted that the assault followed racial threats from a woman identified as the ringleader of a group of three females.
The woman reportedly declared that the group intended to beat up the “haole boys,” suggesting a possible racial motive behind the violence.
The brawl began around 10 p.m. after a group of young people allegedly threw chairs and attacked the family inside the resort.
Earlier that evening, relatives said the confrontation stemmed from escalating tensions, with Maui youths reportedly harassing visitors near Whalers Village before the incident at the resort.
Police arrested a 20-year-old man from Makawao on suspicion of assault, but he was later released while investigators continued their inquiry.
Despite the family's allegations of a hate motive, law enforcement has not classified the incident as a hate crime.
