Father Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Murder of Son and Attempted Murder of Two Other Children

Father Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Murder of Son and Attempted Murder of Two Other Children

Jeffery Smerer, 45, of Port Huron, Michigan, received a life‑without‑parole sentence for the September 11, 2025 shooting that killed his 17‑year‑old son and injured two younger children. The sentencing took place on Monday.

Smerer entered a guilty plea in May to charges that included open murder, assault with intent to commit murder, first‑degree child abuse, and multiple felony firearm offenses. The plea eliminated the need for a trial.

The presiding judge emphasized that avoiding a lengthy, emotionally charged trial spared the surviving victims from having to recount the tragedy repeatedly. The sentence remained unchanged despite the plea.

During the hearing, the two surviving children described how an ordinary school morning turned into a catastrophic event. Bentley, now 19, recounted his brother Kayleb waiting to leave for school when their father pointed a gun and opened fire.

Bentley explained that Kayleb was seated on the sofa with a backpack, watching a video, when the shooting began. He noted that his father appeared visibly upset while listening to the testimony.

Addressing his father directly, Bentley said that tears would not alter the consequences and condemned the act that killed his brother and left his sister severely injured. He expressed that his father deserved the repercussions of his actions.

Jeffery Smerer was sentenced to life in prison on June 29, 2026 for shooting dead his son, Kayleb Smerer, and critically injuring his other children Bentley, 13, and Kinzley, 12.

Authorities reported that Smerer had intended to kill all three children before taking his own life, fearing imprisonment. He later claimed his suicide attempt failed because the pistol jammed.

Earlier that same day, Smerer faced sentencing on a separate misdemeanor indecent exposure charge stemming from a 2020 incident involving a child at a family‑run daycare. The two cases were heard consecutively.

Investigators stated that Smerer first wounded himself before using a .380 handgun to shoot the children. He allegedly attempted to end his own life after the assault.

His wife, Brandi, and their eldest son intervened, disarming him before further harm could occur. All three children were transported to the hospital, where Kayleb later died.

Bentley suffered severe facial injuries, including shattered cheekbones, an upper‑jaw fracture, and nasal damage. Kinzley required extensive facial reconstruction and remains partially paralysed from the shoulders down.

Family updates indicate that Bentley has been discharged from the hospital and has returned to school. Kinzley continues physical and occupational therapy, having regained movement in her right arm while still lacking finger function.

The family buried Kayleb on what would have been his 18th birthday, marking a tragic milestone. The burial took place in the family’s hometown, underscoring the lasting impact.

Smerer’s attorney acknowledged the irreversible harm and noted that his client accepted responsibility from the outset without shifting blame. He described the guilty plea as a meaningful act of accountability.

The court concluded that the plea, while not affecting the sentence, prevented the family from enduring weeks of traumatic testimony. The decision aimed to reduce further emotional distress for the survivors.

Jeffery Smerer will spend the remainder of his life in a state correctional facility.
