The prospect of Apple launching a cheaper version of its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset is growing increasingly uncertain, following a development that suggests the company has halted work on a key component.
Sources in the display industry have revealed that Samsung Display has finalized a decision to terminate the development project for displays for the Apple XR device, with the project expected to officially end this September.
According to the report, Samsung Display has already entered the winding-up phase of the project, which began earlier this year, and will completely stop working on it by September.
The Apple XR device was expected to feature a budget-friendly alternative to the high-end Vision Pro headset, which boasts two high-resolution internal micro-OLED displays.
Samsung Display had been working on a method to construct OLEDs on a glass substrate, which would have significantly reduced manufacturing costs and made the budget headset more viable.
However, it appears that Apple's interest in the budget headset has waned, with the company reportedly shifting its focus to the development of smart glasses, which are now expected to arrive next year.
