Two Minnesota brothers have turned a simple lemonade stand into a significant fundraising effort for veterans, raising more than $60,000 for a nonprofit that supports service members.
The boys, 11 and 8, first sold lemonade at a local golf tournament in 2018, and the event was organized by a nonprofit that hosts tournaments nationwide to aid veterans across six focus areas.
Their initial effort brought in $359, inspiring them to expand their sales to include candy bars and golf balls, and to seek local sponsorships that helped boost their contributions.
The mother of the brothers describes the initiative as a "contagious" community effort, noting that classmates, teammates, and local residents often visit the stand to offer support and share in the experience of honoring veterans.
Among the veterans who have attended the tournaments is a decorated Army helicopter pilot who, in a recent year, presented the boys with his Silver Star as a token of gratitude and wrote a heartfelt letter.
The nonprofit, founded in 2005, has raised over $19 million and supported more than 400,000 military families, while also hosting an annual reunion event in Florida that reconnects veterans and their families.
Executive director Chris LaRocque praised the brothers’ initiative, calling it a powerful example of young people stepping up to make a difference and a reminder of the nation's gratitude for its service members.
He emphasized that the organization’s mission remains close to his heart, reflecting the sacrifices made by generations and the ongoing commitment to support those who have served.
