The widow of slain conservative media pundit Charlie Kirk faced her husband's alleged killer for the first time since he was murdered nearly 10 months ago.
Erika, 37, was joined by Charlie Kirk's parents in court on Monday, the beginning of a week-long preliminary hearing in Utah that will preview much of the prosecution's evidence against Tyler Robinson, 23, who stands accused of shooting Charlie at a speech at Utah Valley University last September.
The preliminary hearing determines whether prosecutors have a strong enough case against Robinson to try him for aggravated murder.
Donald Trump Jr. was also in the courtroom in support of the Kirks, and at the hearing's start, the judge urged those attending to stay composed and not create distractions, acknowledging that the subject matter would be emotional.
Before the hearing began, Charlie Kirk's family released a statement on social media, expressing their gratitude for the support they've received and their hope that justice will be served.
"Charlie was a beloved husband, son, brother, friend, and father," the statement read. "Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children."
In a poignant moment during Charlie Kirk's memorial service, his wife Erika expressed forgiveness for her husband's killer, citing the teachings of Jesus Christ and her husband's own desire to forgive.
"My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life," she said. "Our Savior said, 'Father, forgive them, for they not know what they do.' That young man … I forgive him. I forgive him because it was what Christ did, and it's what Charlie would do."
Charlie Kirk was a prominent conservative media personality and co-founder of an advocacy group that focuses on conservative and family-minded politics among American youth.
He was often the target of liberal and hard-left activist vitriol, but was known for his ability to out-debate students supporting opposing views.
