Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Jackson Denies President's Request

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Jackson Denies President's Request

On Monday, a Supreme Court justice denied a request from the former president to reinstate key portions of a mail‑ballot executive order.

The decision follows a federal judge’s earlier ruling that blocked several elements of the order, including the creation of a federal voter list and a requirement that voters prove citizenship at registration.

Signed in March 2025, the order aimed to safeguard election integrity by limiting post‑Election Day ballot counts, prohibiting non‑citizen registration, and addressing alleged fraud.

In response, the Court granted the plaintiff states a seven‑day window to file replies to the emergency application.

An appeals court had previously rejected enforcement of the order’s critical provisions, and a district court had declared that the president lacks authority over election law.

The Department of Justice’s appeal, which argued that agencies were still deliberating implementation, was dismissed by the same justice who denied the request.

The ruling reaffirms that election oversight remains a state responsibility and that federal executive actions must conform to existing legal frameworks.
