When a Windows PC stops working properly and fails to boot up, the recovery process can be challenging, especially without a recovery drive on hand.
Microsoft has introduced a new feature called Cloud Rebuild, currently available in preview versions of Windows, designed to simplify the recovery process.
Cloud Rebuild restores a Windows 11 PC to a clean, known-good state by performing a full OS reinstall when Windows won't boot.
The feature downloads the target Windows image and the device's drivers from Windows Update, eliminating the need for a USB media, custom image, or a healthy currently installed OS.
Unlike Cloud Download, introduced in 2020, which allows reinstalling Windows via the Reset This PC option in Settings, Cloud Rebuild is accessible even when the PC won't boot.
It's possible that Cloud Rebuild will first attempt system repair using Quick Machine Recovery, and if that fails, automatically redirect to a cloud-based reinstallation.
To try Cloud Rebuild, users can access the feature directly from the Windows Recovery Environment, selecting Troubleshoot, then Recovery and Uninstallation, and finally Cloud Rebuild.
Within WinRE, a wired Ethernet connection or a Wi-Fi network is required, and users must confirm the data loss warning before the rebuild begins.
As of now, the new Cloud Rebuild feature is intended for system administrators, with Microsoft describing the feature in more detail on a dedicated support page.
