The body of a 26-year-old woman has been recovered from the waters off San Diego's La Jolla Shores Beach, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after an unresponsive person was spotted floating in shallow water.
The woman, identified as Bryn Waite, was pronounced dead at the scene near the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier.
Waite, a native of Anchorage, Alaska, had recently been living in San Diego and had gotten engaged, according to friends.
Friends described Waite as incredibly sweet, kind, and genuinely warm, with a light that touched many lives.
Waite had a passion for animals and the beach, and her public Instagram account featured photos from her travels, including Joshua Tree National Park.
The cause and manner of Waite's death remain pending investigation by the San Diego Police Department, which is leading the investigation.
The Medical Examiner's Office listed Waite's place of injury as "Ocean – Undetermined" and said the date and time of injury are unknown.
Waite had played defender at Central Washington University during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, earning 15 appearances, eight starts, and two assists over 723 career minutes.
Friends and family will miss Waite dearly, and the circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
