Martinez and Romero publicly criticize Gary Neville as an idiot

Martinez and Romero publicly criticize Gary Neville as an idiot

Two Argentina defenders have responded pointedly to criticism from a former England international after their team’s victory over England.

Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez were described by the pundit as the “best worst centre-halves in the world” following their performances.

The commentator had questioned Martinez’s positioning and praised the pair’s resilience, noting their refusal to give up during a difficult stretch of play.

In a joint interview after the match, Martinez said the defenders are accustomed to public scrutiny and prefer to answer with their performances.

“We’re used to people always talking about us,” Martinez said. “We don’t really respond, we just let our play on the pitch do the talking, always with respect.”

Romero offered a sharper reply when asked about the remarks, expressing hope that he would not behave similarly after retiring.

“The only thing I hope is that when I retire, I don’t act like such an idiot,” Romero said, adding that players should not face constant criticism for doing their best.

He emphasized the significance of the moment, stating the squad is making history and feels a deep connection to the national shirt.

Argentina will face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday at 8pm BST.
