Philippines, Chile to Sign Trade Pact by October Deadline

Philippines, Chile to Sign Trade Pact by October Deadline

The Philippines and Chile are preparing to finalize their Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by October, according to the Department of Trade and Industry. The agreement will be signed after a legal review process. The aim is to strengthen ties between the two countries.

Once the legal scrubbing concludes, the CEPA is projected to become effective in 2027. The early implementation is intended to open South American markets for Philippine products. The timing aligns with the country's export diversification strategy.

This agreement marks the Philippines' first trade deal with a Latin American nation. It is expected to broaden export destinations for Philippine goods. The move supports a broader diversification of trade partners.

Key sectors likely to benefit include agriculture, semiconductors, and minerals. These industries stand to gain improved market access. The agreement also aims to support value‑added exports.

The CEPA establishes a modern framework for cooperation across trade, investment, the digital economy, MSMEs, labor, and environmental standards. It creates a platform for joint initiatives in these areas. The framework is designed to enhance mutual competitiveness.

The agreement is anticipated to generate new opportunities for Filipino businesses amid ongoing uncertainties in global trade. It provides a stable partnership with a major South American economy. The initiative is part of a broader effort to secure alternative markets.

The DTI is also working to finalize a free trade agreement with the European Union. Negotiations are underway on an agriculture‑related issue. Progress on the EU agreement is expected to continue through 2025.

A free trade agreement with Canada is projected to conclude negotiations this year. The partnership would open Canadian markets to Philippine products. The agreement would complement the CEPA and EU negotiations.

The DTI plans to conclude the review of the Japan‑Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement by November. The review will assess the agreement's performance and potential adjustments. Completion of the review will inform future trade policy decisions.
