Red-state senators criticized for blocking Todd Blanche

The confirmation of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to a permanent role has hit a roadblock, with two Republican Senators from red states opposing his nomination. Outgoing Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina have vowed not to confirm Blanche, despite having previously endorsed and voted for former Attorney General Merrick Garland for the same position.

The perceived hypocrisy in Cornyn and Tillis' actions has sparked outrage online, with critics pointing out the stark contrast between their past support for Garland and their current opposition to Blanche. At the time of Garland's confirmation, both Senators characterized him as an experienced and bipartisan figure, but during Biden's presidency, Garland oversaw a DOJ that was criticized for its politically motivated actions, including indicting Trump and investigating traditional Catholics as potential violent extremists.

Columnists and commentators have seized on the perceived hypocrisy, with some noting that Cornyn and Tillis' actions are a betrayal of their previous statements. "Both Tillis and Cornyn voted to confirm Garland and then sat back idly as a weaponized DOJ/FBI destroyed lives for purely partisan reasons," said one commentator. "The Anti-Weaponization Fund would begin to right the wrongs and that is why they oppose Todd Blanche. Pitiful."

Cornyn's loss in the Republican primary and Tillis' decision not to run for reelection have also been cited as evidence of their declining popularity and perceived disloyalty to Trump. The President himself weighed in on the controversy, calling Blanche a "STAR" and accusing Cornyn and Tillis of refusing to vote for a "Great Nominee" who will remain in office regardless.

The controversy surrounding Cornyn and Tillis' actions has highlighted the deep divisions within the Republican Party and the ongoing struggle for power and influence within the party's leadership. As the confirmation process for Blanche continues, it remains to be seen whether the opposition from Cornyn and Tillis will ultimately prevail.
