The possibility of Apple launching a more affordable version of its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset seems increasingly unlikely, as the company has reportedly halted work on a new OLED screen for the rumored product.
According to industry sources, Samsung Display has finalized a decision to terminate the development project for displays for the Apple XR device, with the project expected to be completely stopped by early September.
The timeline for the project's termination refers to when Samsung Display will cease working on the project, not when the budget headset would have been released, which was not expected until after 2028.
The Vision Pro headset features two high-resolution internal micro-OLED displays, which contribute significantly to its high price tag, currently at a $200 premium.
Samsung Display had been working on a method to construct OLEDs on a glass substrate that would drastically lower manufacturing costs, making it an ideal solution for a budget successor to the Vision Pro.
However, Apple's interest in the project has diminished, and the company has shifted its focus to smart glasses, which are now expected to arrive next year.
