House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris has warned that Democratic Socialists of America candidates are pushing the Democratic Party further to the left, a shift he believes could unsettle voters in the upcoming midterm election.
Harris said he remains optimistic that Republicans can maintain their narrow majority in the House, arguing that a more radical left wing within the party will make the electorate wary as November approaches.
He described the party as increasingly influenced by “truly communist elements,” asserting that voters will recognize Democrats as the “crazy party” and that this perception could benefit the GOP.
Republican lawmakers are returning to their districts to campaign, emphasizing the need to keep control of the House for the remainder of the current presidential term.
In several recent primaries, candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America have won, including two in New York City who defeated progressive incumbents and a third who overcame an opponent endorsed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Harris criticized the policies of the New York City candidates, labeling them as beyond socialism and equating them with communism, citing examples from Russia and China to illustrate his point.
Harris, who holds a safe red seat after Maryland Democrats blocked a redistricting effort, remains focused on defending the Republican majority in the House.
