EU Delays Implementation of the ETIAS Travel Authorization System

EU Delays Implementation of the ETIAS Travel Authorization System

Travelers heading to Europe this summer have encountered significant disruptions since the European Union introduced its Electronic Entry and Exit System (EES). Long lines, missed flights, and airport congestion have become common as passengers navigate the new biometric checkpoints.

While the EES issues remain unresolved, the EU has announced a further postponement of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). The launch date has been moved to 2027 from the previously targeted fourth quarter of 2026.

ETIAS was originally scheduled for a spring 2023 debut, but it has faced repeated delays. The implementing body confirmed that the earlier timeline was no longer realistic due to technical challenges and the slow rollout of the EES.

The system will provide a travel authorization for non‑European Union visitors to 30 European countries, including those outside the Schengen Area. Notably, Cyprus and Ireland are not yet participating in the EES, and Ireland has not agreed to ETIAS.

The application fee for ETIAS has increased from an initial 7 euros to 20 euros, roughly $23, reflecting the higher costs associated with the program.

Unlike conventional visas issued by embassies, ETIAS will be an online pre‑authorization that is expected to be simpler and less expensive for travelers.

The United Kingdom launched a comparable travel authorization, the ETA, in February, and it has also experienced technical outages during the summer.

At present, U.S. visitors do not need to secure ETIAS, as the program’s launch is still slated for 2027 with no specific date announced.

When ETIAS becomes operational, travelers will encounter an additional step and fee as part of the European entry process.
