Meralco has joined a media and information literacy campaign to counter misinformation that has impacted the power distributor.
The company and MediaQuest signed a memorandum of agreement to formalize the partnership.
Vice‑president Joe R. Zaldarriaga said the initiative will first target employees before expanding to the company’s more than eight million customers.
Meralco has been the target of false claims, prompting it to strengthen its efforts against disinformation through the program.
Zaldarriaga emphasized that fighting fake news requires a commitment to truth, noting that online platforms continue to spread lies.
Ramon Isberto, a corporate affairs consultant at MediaQuest, highlighted that the collaboration will promote media literacy among staff in both organizations.
He added that enhancing critical thinking skills within the workforce is essential for combating misinformation.
The campaign, launched in 2024, aims to foster critical thinking and reduce the spread of false information.
Meralco’s controlling shareholder, Beacon Electric Asset Holdings, is partly owned by PLDT Inc.; Hastings Holdings, a unit of the PLDT Beneficial Trust Fund subsidiary MediaQuest, holds an interest in BusinessWorld through the Philippine Star Group.
