Channel 5 has launched a new crime‑comedy series titled “Benidorm is Murder,” starring John Hannah as Dennis Crown, a former UK detective who now manages a bar in the Spanish seaside resort.
The eight‑minute teaser reveals Crown teaming up with barmaid Rosa, portrayed by Carolina Bécquer, a local enthusiast of classic murder‑mystery television, to investigate tourist killings that occur on the promenade.
Episodes blend humor with investigative drama, featuring cases such as the fatal fall of a tribute performer from a hotel balcony and the suspicion surrounding a popular impersonator.

Production was carried out on location throughout Benidorm’s bustling strip, capturing the town’s nightlife, souvenir stalls, and iconic beachfront scenery.
Cast members reported that filming proceeded smoothly despite language differences among crew members, while director Simon Delaney pursued a meticulous visual style that required numerous takes.
Hannah emphasized the series’ focus on working‑class characters, noting that the setting offers a contrast to the affluent locales typical of many contemporary crime shows.

Bécquer, making her first appearance on British television, described Hannah’s mentorship on set, highlighting a collaborative dynamic that eased her transition into the role.
Guest stars include Denise Welch and Alistair McGowan; the principal cast resided in Benidorm’s historic Old Town rather than the resort’s more commercial districts.
The inaugural season consists of six episodes, and production discussions indicate that a second season is already being considered.

“Benidorm is Murder” premieres at 9 p.m. on Channel 5.
