Wilkin’s family and friends have launched a fundraiser to raise $30,000 for a private investigator. The goal is to cover expenses associated with a private investigation into the circumstances of his death.
A former sheriff's investigator who has worked in Puerto Rico noted that a howling noise reported by Wilkin could indicate stalking and suggested that an individual may have lured him away from his campsite. He also expressed concern that local police may lack the specialized training and resources required for a homicide investigation.
