The Smithsonian Institution has unveiled an exhibit titled “In Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness,” celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with 250 objects that trace the nation’s history from the 1700s to today.
The collection features iconic artifacts such as a compass from the 1806 Lewis and Clark expedition, Dolly Madison’s dress, Abraham Lincoln’s hat, and the desk on which the Declaration of Independence was drafted.
Several items reflect contemporary liberal politics, including a pink “p-ssy hat” worn at the 2017 Women’s March, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s gavel, butterfly wings carried by an immigrant activist, a typewriter used by Maya Angelou, and a photograph of a 1970s drag queen in a glittering gown.
In contrast, only seven objects are linked to conservative movements: a MAGA hat, a Tea Party placard, a pro‑life sign, a dress worn by Melania Trump, a sign opposing the Equal Rights Amendment, a Ronald Reagan campaign t‑shirt, and a National Rifle Association button.
Nearly two dozen items represent liberal causes, including LGBT rights, farm‑worker advocacy, abortion access, racial justice, environmentalism, labor unions, and the Democratic Party, with four pieces dedicated to the gay rights movement and six to Christianity.
The Christian exhibits include a pew from a Black Presbyterian church, a Bible associated with anti‑slavery sentiment, and other items that highlight the faith’s historical influence on American society.
Representations of other religions are also present, featuring a Seder plate and Hanukkah lamp for Judaism, and a plate depicting a Mormon temple.
Among the LGBT artifacts is a red tie once owned by activist Carmen Vázquez, whose description emphasizes her lifelong commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and broader social justice.
Immigration themes are addressed through nearly two dozen items, such as a soccer ball donated by the founder of a refugee youth team, illustrating the experiences of recent Asian and Latino migrants, while earlier immigrant groups receive minimal representation.
The exhibit’s director explained that the selections focus on moments when communities sought recognition and identity, aiming to celebrate diverse contributions while maintaining an engaging narrative.
Beyond political themes, the display also showcases everyday American life, featuring household appliances, movie props, historical currency, musical instruments, technological milestones, and sports memorabilia, offering a comprehensive view of the nation’s cultural evolution.
