Trump's Iran War Resolve Gains GOP Support Despite Growing

The Senate Republicans blocked a new war powers resolution that would have required President Trump to seek congressional approval for military action in Iran, even as the death toll rises and fuel costs surge.

The measure, introduced after the administration resumed strikes, was led by Senator Chris Van Hollen, who argued that accountability was needed after claims of victory.

Van Hollen questioned how a purported victory could coexist with ongoing casualties and rising energy prices, emphasizing the need to end the conflict.

Aside from a single Republican, Senator Susan Collins, no other senator joined Democrats in supporting the measure; Senators Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul, who usually align with Democrats on such matters, abstained.

Senator Bill Cassidy, who had previously been pivotal in advancing a similar resolution, announced his opposition at the last moment, preventing the bill from advancing.

The Senate's failure follows a House vote that succeeded in passing a war powers resolution by securing enough Republican support.

During the debate, Senator Tim Sheehy warned of the dangers posed by Iran, citing the potential for severe harm to U.S. service members and the nation, and quoted a graphic description of the threat.
