Top Wimbledon Player Receives Medical Treatment Following On-Court Collision with Ball Girl

Doubles player Demi Schuurs required medical attention after a collision with a ballgirl at the All England Club during the Wimbledon tournament.

Schuurs and her partner Ellen Perez were competing on No3 Court against Shuko Aoyama and Liang En-shuo in their bid to reach the semi-finals of the women's doubles.

As they attempted to hold serve at 3-3 in the first set, Schuurs backed away to retrieve a looping forehand, but failed to notice a ballgirl beside her.

The 32-year-old narrowly missed hitting the ballgirl with her racquet as she tried to return the ball, before colliding with her and sending both tumbling to the floor.

Former tennis player Melanie South described the incident, saying that Schuurs 'was totally looking at the ball and just had no awareness that the ball girl was on her shoulder.'

Schuurs initially looked in pain but made her way to her feet before exchanging a high five with the ball girl, who was reportedly shaken but uninjured.

She was then allowed a medical timeout to be seen by a physio before returning to the match, but despite recovering to hold her serve, Schuurs and Perez eventually fell to a 6-4 6-4 defeat against Aoyama and En-shuo.

Schuurs later reflected on the defeat on Instagram, saying that losing was never easy, but that she was proud of their progress and looking forward to working with her partner Ellen Perez in the future.

Aoyama and En-shuo will now take on second seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani for a place in the final.
