Survey Finds Significant Support Among Democratic Voters for Candidates Embracing Democratic Socialism Label

A recent survey has shed light on the perception of democratic socialists among Democrat or Democrat-leaning respondents. The poll, conducted in January, found that 32 percent of respondents said they like candidates who describe themselves as democratic socialists. However, the remaining 68 percent did not express a corresponding dislike for such candidates, with only 11 percent reporting a negative view.

A closer examination of the survey results reveals that socialism tends to appeal primarily to young, white, college-educated, and affluent Democrats. For instance, white respondents were twice as likely as blacks and Hispanics to hold a favorable view of democratic socialists. Similarly, upper-income respondents and those with college degrees were more likely to support democratic socialist candidates than their lower-income and non-college-educated counterparts.

The survey also found that respondents aged 18-29 were more likely to favor democratic socialist candidates than those in any other age group. Despite these findings, a significant majority of respondents across all demographic groups declared that they neither liked nor disliked democratic socialist candidates. This ambivalence could be seen as an opportunity for socialist candidates, who have recently made waves in congressional primaries.

Recent election results have given socialists reason to be optimistic, with several socialist candidates endorsed by Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City defeating their establishment-backed opponents. Additionally, 29-year-old socialist Melat Kiros unseated a 15-term Democratic Rep. in Colorado, further fueling the momentum behind socialist candidates. These developments have sparked speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run, with some seeing Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as a potential contender.

The success of socialist candidates poses a challenge to the Democratic Party establishment, which may face increasing pressure from socialist-leaning candidates in the coming years. As the party navigates these changes, it remains to be seen how the perception of democratic socialists will evolve among Democrat or Democrat-leaning respondents. One thing is clear, however: the recent survey and election results have significant implications for the future of the Democratic Party and its relationship with socialist ideology.
