Republican Proposes Bill to Reinforce the Declaration of Independence on the Nation’s 250th Anniversary

Republican Proposes Bill to Reinforce the Declaration of Independence on the Nation’s 250th Anniversary

A newly elected Republican representative introduced legislation to reaffirm the Declaration of Independence as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary.

The proposal follows a historical pattern of marking major national milestones with the founding document, echoing past commemorations of similar significance.

Matt Van Epps, who won a December 2025 special election, said the measure responds to what he views as an increase in socialist ideas within the Democratic Party.

He referenced recent primary victories by candidates in heavily Democratic districts, noting their policy positions on immigration, prison reform and foreign affairs.

Van Epps argued that these positions clash with the principles articulated in the Declaration and called for a renewed commitment to those ideals.

The timing of the resolution remains unclear, as Congress recessed for the July 4 holiday following a procedural dispute over unrelated legislation.

Earlier in the month, a senator introduced a companion resolution in the Senate, which passed without opposition.

Both lawmakers said the effort seeks to bolster national pride, citing historical polling data that shows a decline in Americans’ self‑identification as proud citizens.

They described the Declaration as an inheritance meant to remind citizens of the founders’ intent to create a self‑governing nation.

The legislators expressed a desire to preserve that legacy for future generations.
