Celebrations across the United States mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, but a planned parade in Philadelphia was canceled Friday because forecast temperatures were expected to reach dangerous levels.
Officials warned that Philadelphia International Airport could see a high of 104°F, the hottest reading recorded there since July 3, 1966. The extreme heat prompted city officials to halt the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade.
The city’s Health Commissioner extended the existing heat‑health emergency through 8 p.m. Sunday, urging residents to take precautions against heat‑related illness.
The cancelled event had been slated to include multiple floats and marching bands, organized by a nonprofit partnership dedicated to commemorating the anniversary.
Michael DelBene, president and chief executive of the organizing group, said the decision was driven by the paramount responsibility to protect the safety of staff, guests, and participants, even though the cancellation was deeply disappointing.
