The files show that the FBI’s New York Field Office instructed U.S. Customs and Border Protection not to detain or question Dr. Peter Daszak, the chief scientist of EcoHealth Alliance, upon his return from China.
Customs officials had already prepared to interview Daszak, who had been traveling from the Wuhan region. The FBI’s directive effectively halted the planned inspection, and the encounter was never carried out.
EcoHealth Alliance, the organization led by Daszak, has faced scrutiny for its funding ties to the Wuhan Institute of Virology and its involvement in gain‑of‑function research. In 2024, the Department of Health and Human Services suspended all federal funding to the group and began debarment proceedings.
