Trump Proposed Measures: Strengthening Borders Against China's
In a recent development in the world of trade negotiations and agreements, leading trade experts are emphasizing the importance of taking a measured approach in reviewing and updating the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). As the review process continues, both Mexico and Canada should be encouraged to address the agreement's most significant loopholes, which will strengthen North American manufacturing, increase reciprocal commitments to combat unfair trade, strengthen regional supply chains, and protect North American markets from exploitation by non-market economies through exploiting loopholes in the trade rules. A comprehensive review of the agreement is required to ensure the agreement is genuinely achieving its intended purpose of fostering fair trade in North America. Currently, the United States' role in North American trade is crucial, as it accounts for roughly 85% of the region's economic output. The market access offered by the United States is incredibly valuable; it must be accompanied by reciprocal commitments to counter unfair trade, fortify regional supply chains, and protect markets from exploitation. The current review presents a rare opportunity to modernize the USMCA, close loopholes, and guarantee that the agreement meets its initial goal. President Trump is spot on to resist calls for an imprudent extension. A well-planned review process is worth the wait.
