A female prison warden has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for having a romantic relationship with a convicted murderer. The warden, 29, began the affair with the inmate, John Otugade, in October 2022 while working at a maximum-security prison in England.
Otugade was serving a 25-year sentence for murder at the time of their relationship. The warden, Rebecca Green, initially denied any wrongdoing when suspicions were raised, but investigators later found evidence of their relationship on her phone.
Police seized Green's phone after searching her vehicle and discovered messages that confirmed her relationship with Otugade. They also found that Otugade had smuggled a phone into prison, which listed Green as his "partner" in his contacts.
Green, from Holbeach in Lincolnshire, pleaded guilty to wilful misconduct in public office. Her actions were deemed a serious breach of her responsibilities as a prison officer, putting the safety and security of staff and prisoners at risk.
An investigator said that Green's actions undermined the work of the prison and that the sentence shows how seriously the police and courts take such breaches. Green will now serve time in prison herself, a stark consequence of her actions.
