The US military launched powerful strikes against Iran on Tuesday, in a move aimed at imposing heavy costs for the country's targeting and attacking of commercial shipping vessels.
The strikes come in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the day. Tehran's actions were deemed a clear violation of the ceasefire, according to the US.
President Trump, who is currently attending a NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, has taken a strong stance against Iran's aggression. The US military strikes are seen as a direct response to Iran's unwarranted and dangerous actions in the international waterway.
The targets of the US strikes included Iranian air defense systems, coastal surveillance systems, ground-to-air missiles, launch sites for anti-ship cruise missiles, drone launch sites, and Iranian port facilities, according to senior American officials.
The US has been taking a tough stance against Iran in recent days, following a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The crisis escalated further on Tuesday, with the US revoking the Iran oil sanctions waiver in response to the attacks.
