Microsoft has formally requested that Apple add wireless clipboard sharing between iPhone devices and Windows computers.
If approved, users could copy text or images on an iPhone and paste them directly onto a Windows PC, provided the devices are linked, removing the need for email or messaging workarounds.
The functionality already exists on Windows, but it requires the destination app to be in the foreground and explicit user permission for each transfer.
Microsoft aims to streamline the process so it mirrors the universal clipboard experience that currently connects Mac computers and iPhones.
The request is now in Phase 3 of Apple’s implementation pipeline, indicating that development has begun. Apple has committed to delivering a beta version by fall 2027, with a full public release expected by late 2027 or early 2028 after a typical six‑to‑eight‑week beta period.
Rollout will be limited to the European Union, reflecting compliance with the Digital Markets Act, which classifies Apple as a gatekeeper and requires certain competitive concessions.
Microsoft has also submitted a separate request to enable real‑time synchronization of the iPhone’s Photos library with a Windows computer, though this proposal is at an earlier stage.
Both companies are still refining technical details, and no definitive beta launch date has been announced.
