Bomb Threat and Vandalism Erupt at Buffalo City Hall Following Somali Independence Day Celebrations

Bomb Threat and Vandalism Erupt at Buffalo City Hall Following Somali Independence Day Celebrations

The Independence Day celebration in Buffalo has been canceled due to concerns over safety. The mayor's office stated that an appropriate site could not be identified that would provide a safe and widely accessible viewing experience for residents.

Mayor Ryan had initially expressed interest in hosting a fireworks display, but the hired vendor raised real questions about the safety of launching fireworks near City Hall. Despite having held other fireworks shows in the past, Buffalo has not hosted a July 4 celebration in at least a generation.

Former New York State Republican Party Chair Rep. Nick Langworthy criticized Mayor Ryan's decision, arguing that it was a matter of choice rather than a logistical challenge. Langworthy stated that the people of Buffalo deserve leaders who are proud to celebrate the country, not ones who treat patriotism as an afterthought.

Buffalo city council member set to raise the Somali flag in front of Buffalo City Hall on July 1, 2026, as the local Somali community gathered to mark Somalia's Independence Day.

Buffalo will still participate in the ongoing America 250 celebrations, which will include events such as the "Stars Stripes and Signers" celebration at the Buffalo Naval Park and Canalside area.
