Elizabeth Smart, a survivor of a high-profile kidnapping, has stated that there remains a possibility that Nancy Guthrie, an 84‑year‑old Tucson resident, could still be alive after her disappearance. Smart emphasized that no body has been recovered, which keeps hope alive and urges continued efforts to locate her.
The investigation into Guthrie’s abduction is ongoing, with DNA testing and other forensic analyses not yet released to the public. A ransom note and a subsequent message claiming Guthrie had died have been found to be inauthentic by investigators.
Guthrie was taken from her home on the morning of February 1. A Nest doorbell security video captured a masked intruder at her doorstep that same day, prompting the FBI and local authorities to request any information from the public.
Smart urged anyone with details, no matter how small, to report them, noting that such information could be pivotal. The combined reward from law‑enforcement agencies, a crime‑stoppers program, and the Guthrie family totals more than $1.2 million.
In 2002, Smart was abducted at knifepoint from her Utah home and rescued nine months later after the public identified her kidnappers. Since then, she has pursued amateur bodybuilding, winning a novice competition in April.
