Radical Colorado Democratic congressional nominee Melat Kiros downplayed the growing influence of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) faction within the Democratic Party during a recent appearance on "Firing Line."
Kiros, a 29-year-old Democratic Socialist who was born in Ethiopia, ousted 15-time incumbent Democrat Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado's 1st District in July's primary. Kiros is backed by the DSA, which is making inroads within the Democratic National Committee.
The Democratic Party is currently in the midst of a communist takeover, with the DSA pushing for radical changes to the country's government and institutions. White House Press Secretary recently warned that these radicals are "not here to negotiate, they're here to destroy."
The DSA's influence can be seen in various cities across the country, including Washington D.C., where Democratic Socialist DC City Councilwoman Janeese Lewis George declared victory in the seven-way primary to replace Mayor Muriel Bowser for DC Mayor. In New York, the takeover has begun happening at breakneck speed, with DSA-backed candidates scoring big in recent elections.
During her appearance on "Firing Line," Kiros brushed aside criticism that some DSA members openly identify as communists, saying that "some members of the Democratic Party are proudly proclaiming themselves as capitalists, and it's a big tent, right?" Kiros emphasized that the voters ultimately decide who wins elections, rather than the party's ideology.
The DSA's radical proposals include fundamentally changing the structure of the republic, eliminating the President, the Senate, and the Supreme Court, and replacing them with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress. This would give Congress significant power and control over the country's government and institutions.
The DSA's website states that "for the working class to govern, we need a new political system." The organization aims to end political corruption and legalize bribery by getting rid of lobbyists, dark money, and Citizens United, and publicly financing all elections.
